HISTORICAL OPORTO | ALIADOS & SÃO BENTO

The Aliados are the main avenue in the city. It has several hotels and is the place where the Portuenses meet to celebrate public events. Its name honors the World War I’s allies. This avenue was requalified by two of the most highly-regarded architects both in the North and in the whole country: Porto-born Souto Moura and Matosinhos-born Siza Vieira, both of them Pritzker prize winners. The ancient São Bento train station still is the first thing many visitors see when they enter the city. Before there were railways, here stood a convent that fell into decay as a 19th century law established no new nun should be ordained.
