HISTORICAL OPORTO | BATALHA & SANTA CATARINA

The Santa Catarina street is the main commercial area in the city and it has been for quite some time. Besides the sheer amount of clothing shops located here, you’ll also find the Temporary Market of Bolhão near. The first Portuguese film was shot here, in 1896, and it showed the seamstresses employed by the Confiança shirt factory leaving their workplace as their shifts ended. These 55 seconds of film replicated the former year’s work by the Lumière brothers. Santa Catarina was already a commercial street, a traditional area but also the first to receive all new things.
