COOL OPORTO | CLÉRIGOS
This area caters to two sides of getting to know a place: it has some very relevant historical sites and also nice restaurants, bars and shops. The Clérigos bell tower which gave this neighbourhood its name has largely surpassed in fame the church to which it is attached. When it was finished, in 1763, the tower was the tallest in the whole country. In fact, and although its Baroque design was at first seen as strange, it is now a kind of symbol of the city. The Tuscan architect who designed it, Nicolau Nasoni, was adopted by the city as were many other foreigners – after all most of the families producing Port wine came from England.
